Why Biodegradable Claims Need Verification

Regulatory bodies in both the EU and US are scrutinizing environmental claims more carefully than ever. The FTC Green Guides in the US and the EU Green Claims Directive require that any environmental claim be substantiated by reliable scientific evidence and third-party verification.

For balloon buyers, this means a supplier’s marketing statement that their balloons are “eco-friendly” or “biodegradable” is not sufficient. You need to be able to back up those claims with test data.

What Third-Party Testing Verifies

For biodegradable balloons, relevant third-party tests include:

Biodegradation testing: ASTM D5338 or ISO 14855 measure how much of the material converts to CO2 under controlled industrial composting conditions (58°C, 90% humidity, active microorganisms) over 180 days. Results are reported as a percentage — passing typically requires 90% or more.

Disintegration testing: Measures whether the material physically breaks down into small fragments under composting conditions.

Ecotoxicity testing: Confirms that the resulting compost does not harm plant growth. Required by EN 13432 and similar standards.

Chemical safety (EN71, RoHS): These are separate from biodegradability but equally important — the balloon must also be safe as a product, not just environmentally friendly at end of life.

Three Red Flags to Watch For

Red Flag 1: “Degradable” or “oxo-degradable” claims. Regular plastic can be called “degradable” if it breaks into smaller pieces — but those microplastics persist in the environment. Only materials certified to composting standards genuinely reduce plastic pollution.

Red Flag 2: Test reports on raw pellets only. Some suppliers show a test report on the raw polymer pellets — but the finished balloon product may perform differently after processing, printing, and heat-sealing. Ask for testing on the actual product.

Red Flag 3: No expiration date on test reports. While test reports do not have fixed expiry, if a supplier shows you a report that is many years old and their materials or process has changed, the data may no longer be valid.

Do biodegradable balloons cost more than standard ones?

Yes. PLA+PBAT raw materials cost more than standard polyester film. The premium varies with market prices for petrochemical-derived vs. plant-based polymers.

What is the shelf life of biodegradable balloons?

Uninflated biodegradable balloons have a storage life of 3 to 5 years in cool, dry conditions. Storage life is shorter than standard balloons because the material is already slowly degrading from production.

Can we use biodegradable balloons for food contact?

No. These balloons are designed and tested as celebration/decorative products under toy safety standards, not as food contact materials.
